Orthodontic Treatment

Complex Occlusion Issues/Adjustments

In some cases, dental surgery may be required for complex occlusion (bite) issues, or to make certain adjustments to your bite and the position of your teeth. This is called “orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery.

The specifics of the surgery that’s required will vary depending on the exact problem facing your orthodontic treatment, such as a severe underbite or overbite, or a very crowded and narrow palate. Contact our office to schedule an appointment and learn more.

Preparing For Dental Implants

bone grafts

A bone graft is used to strengthen your jaw if it’s too weak for a dental implant. In this procedure, your gums and jaw are opened with a small incision, and then a special bone powder is packed into the area. Over time, natural bone will heal around the bone powder, restoring the jaw bone and preparing it for a dental implant.

Restoring The Upper Jaw Bone

Sinus lifts

A sinus lift is almost identical to a bone graft, except it’s done when you are getting a dental implant in your upper mouth. In this procedure, bone powder must be packed into the treatment site, but Dr. Julia Winter must first use special surgical techniques to gently lift the sinus lining up and away from the treatment area. This is because the sinus lining is located right next to your jaw bone and the roots of your teeth, so it has to be moved to make room for the new bone tissue.

Smoothing Bone Ridges

Alveolplasty

Alveoloplasty is often done alongside tooth extraction, but can also be done as a standalone procedure. This procedure is also called “bone ridge smoothing.” It involves using a special file to smooth out sharp, bony ridges around the sockets where you’ve had teeth removed. Extractions often result in these pointy ridges, which can interfere with restorative treatments like dental implants and dentures.

Removing Bone Growths

Tori Removal

Dental tori are harmless bone growths that grow near the teeth on the upper or lower palate of the mouth. While they can usually be left in place, they may get in the way of restorative treatments like dental implants, bridges, and dentures. If you need to restore your smile, Dr. Winter may need to remove these bone growths to prepare for your procedure.

Treating Troublesome Teeth

Extractions

Extractions are a last resort at our office. We will always do our best to restore your smile without removing a damaged tooth, but sometimes an extraction is the best way to get your oral health back on track. We provide simple and surgical extractions, and use numbing and sedation to ensure your comfort throughout the entire process.
